How to play Typing Monsters
Words fall from the sky. Type each one before it lands and your hero strikes the monster. Run out of health and the run is over. That is the whole game. This page covers the details that help you last longer and score more.
The basics
- Press Play (or Enter on the home screen). A monster appears at the top of the battlefield and words start dropping toward the ground.
- Start typing any falling word. You don't need to click it. The game locks onto the word that matches your first letters and highlights what you have typed so far.
- Finish the word and your hero lunges and slashes the monster. Longer words hit harder.
- Empty the monster's health bar to clear the level. The next monster is tougher, words fall a little faster and new words arrive a little sooner.
- Don't let words land. Every word that reaches the ground damages you. When your health bar (marked "YOU") hits zero, the game ends and shows your level, words per minute and accuracy.
Controls
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| Letters | Type the word you are targeting. The first letter picks the word. |
| Backspace | Remove the last letter you typed, without losing the target. |
| Space or Esc | Drop the current word and clear what you typed, so you can switch to a more urgent one. This resets your combo. |
| Enter | Start a game from the home screen. |
On a phone or tablet the on-screen keyboard works the same way, though a physical keyboard is much faster.
Combos and the score multiplier
Every correct word adds one to your combo. Every ten words in a row raises your score multiplier by one step, up to ×5 at a 40-word streak. A wrong key, or dropping a word with Space or Esc, resets the combo to zero and the multiplier back to ×1.
That makes accuracy worth more than raw speed. A player who types a little slower but rarely misses will usually finish with a higher score than one who hammers keys and keeps breaking the streak.
Bosses
Every fifth level is a boss. Bosses have more health than normal monsters, and words come down faster while you fight them. Every so often a boss charges up and roars, flinging an extra word or two at you. The roar itself does no damage; the danger is the extra words landing while you are busy with another one.
When you see a boss winding up, finish your current word quickly and be ready to pick off the new arrivals first.
Healing
Now and then a green heal word falls. Type it to win back some health. If you are low, prioritise it over a normal word that is still high up the screen.
How words get harder
Short words stay the most common at every level, so the game never becomes a wall of long vocabulary. What changes is the pace: words fall faster, arrive more often and longer words show up a little more frequently as you climb. Somewhere past level 10 most players find they have to stop reading each word letter by letter and start recognising whole words at a glance, which is exactly the skill that makes everyday typing faster.
Tips for lasting longer
- Always target the lowest word. The word nearest the ground is the one that will hurt you first, even if a shorter word is easier.
- Glance ahead while you type. As you finish one word, look at the next lowest so you can start it instantly.
- Don't panic-switch. Clearing a half-typed word with Space costs your combo. Only switch when another word is genuinely about to land.
- Keep your eyes on the screen, not the keyboard. If you have to look down, it's a sign to practise touch typing. Our typing tips guide explains how.
- Warm up with the 30-second typing test on the home screen. It gives you a WPM number you can compare against the typing speed chart.
